Wolf fans are gutted while Manchester United is given a huge boost in the Champions League

Mini-match report

Arsenal ended Wolverhampton Wanderers’ unbeaten run and dented hopes of making the top four with a 2-0 win at Molineux.

Bukayo Saka and Alexandre Lacazette scored late in both halves for the Gunners to give Mikel Arteta’s men a well-deserved victory and bring them to three points from sixth place in the Premier League standings.

Wolves haven’t always been quick traps this season, but Adama Traore has almost made the turn after just 15 seconds.

Raul Jimenez threw a ball over Arsenal’s defense and Traore ran on it, but was unable to find a way to get past the former wolf issuer Emiliano Martinez.

Traore, who played a central role in the first half, was not close to the maximum in the first half, but was the most threatening player of the Wolves. A clean dribble was followed by a thunderous blow that landed in the North Bank.

Arsenal have been largely at ease, although the Wolves have a hard time finding their fluidity and Mikel Arteta’s team took the lead shortly before half-time.

The cross of Kieran Tierney from the left deviated from Matt Doherty and in the path of Saka who ended up subliminally ending the series of clean sheets by Rui Patricio.

Traore had another chance halfway through the second half after being played by Diogo Jota but cut his efforts on hammering Martinez and the crossbar.

Arsenal continued to look more dangerous and made the game safe in the 86th minute when substitute Lacazette fired home on the turn.

The defeat is Wolves’ first since January 23 in the league and comes on a day when their Champions League rivals have racked up their points.

Wolf fans react

@ NathanReader1: Arsenal was better than us today and that’s the only fact of the matter. You will not be punished in your game at the highest level! To the next!

@ CraigTalbot_3: Really bad day in the office for wolves. It didn’t offer much for the future

@ StuPolak82: It shows how disappointed we were to be beaten by the arsenal.

@ hour90: Poor Wolves today, I need to forget and move on, no complaints about the result. We know we can be much better. Still in a position of strength, all to play for the next 5 games, without the need for negativity. The big game against Sheff Utd on Wednesday now, must not lose for me. Have faith

@ RetroWolves1: Tonight our home atmosphere was seriously escaped … when we started the second part, the crowd would have foamed the chops … it could have completely changed it. Let’s go again on Wednesday

@ Outofdarkness12: We all love Nuno …. but Adama above was a mistake today

@ Jon306: The next game is huge, we lose it and we are at risk of abandoning European places. For me it must be 3-4-3 from the beginning

@ KelNev1: Gutted today we were unable to find the back of the net, losing those 3 important points. Bring it on Wednesday

@ JordanDavies09:We made the bizarre decision to choose not to attack in the first half. Arsenal could not believe their luck, settled, stood before and killed the game. Mistake made, well ah

Nuno explains the absence of Podence

Daniel Podence missed Wolverhampton Wanderers’ defeat against Arsenal due to a “personal problem”.

The Portuguese winger was omitted by the 18-man team from Nuno Espirito Santo on Saturday after returning home to Portugal.

Podence has returned to the UK now and has proven negative for the coronavirus, but government guidelines have excluded him from the game against the Gunners.

“Daniel had to go to Portugal to deal with something really important,” explained Nuno Espirito Santo. “It was a personal problem that he had to solve.

“The moment he came back, we had to follow government guidelines. He has already tested. It turned out to be negative but he must stay at his house. “

The Arsenal’s reaction

Mikel Arteta believes Arsenal’s victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers is one of his best as head of the Gunners.

Bukayo Saka and Alexandre Lacazette’s half-time goals in the half gave Arsenal a 2-0 win over Molineux and took them to three points from their guests at the Premier League table.

The wolves have lost ground against Champions League rivals Leicester City and Manchester United – both of whom had previously won the day – and now have to recover when facing off against Sheffield United on Wednesday.

Arteta Unai Emery’s predecessor failed to beat Nuno Espirito Santo’s Wolves in three attempts, but the Gunners overtook the Molineux men under their new boss.

And Arteta believes that the victory over Wolves, which has been his team’s fourth in succession in all competitions, is among the best in terms of management.

To follow – Sheffield United (A), Wed 8 July.

With all the Wolves’ rivals for the top four winners this weekend, the game against the Blades takes on more significance.

Chris Wilder’s team plays on Sunday, where a win could see them close the gap on Wolves by two points, before a ball is kicked to Bramall Lane.

Wolves will have to rediscover their shape … and quickly if they want to hunt for the Champions League.
