Wigan joins the administration; English Football League passes club 12-point penalty

Wigan is given a 12-point penalty by the EFL after the club announced that he had entered the administration.

The timing of the withdrawal of the Latics points is currently unclear. The league says this can only be decided once the final championship table has been established.

If the club relegates due to the results on the field, the penalty will be imposed in the first division next season. If the club stays outside the bottom three spots, the penalty will be applied to table 2019/20.

Wigan is currently 14th in the championship and eight points ahead of relegation places. If the sanction were currently applied, it would fall at the bottom of the table.

In a statement, the EFL said, “The EFL is waiting for formal notification from the administrators. Once the league receives it, it will begin discussions with the relevant people to help achieve a long-term future for the club.”

Begbies Taylor’s Paul Stanley, Gerald Krasner and Dean Watson have been appointed joint administrators of the club.

Krasner said the coronavirus pandemic had a negative impact on Wigan’s finances for the club.

“Obviously, the break in the championship season due to COVID-19 has a significant impact on the club’s recent fate.

“Wigan Athletic has been a focal point and a source of pride for the city since 1932. Anyone interested in purchasing this historic sports institution should contact the administrators directly.”

Wigan’s Labor MP Lisa Nandy tweeted: “It’s heartbreaking. The Latics have been the heart of Wigan for almost 90 years. I am in contact with the club to support its efforts to find a buyer, secure jobs, and secure the future of our club. “

The Latics were only in the Premier League in 2013 and won the FA Cup for the first time in their history in the same year.

For the year ended June 30, 2019, their last annual financial statements recorded a net loss of AU $ 16.5 million.

The club was owned by Dave Whelan, co-founder of JJB Sports until November 2018, when he and his family sold to the Hong Kong-based International Entertainment Corporation (IEC).

Another change of ownership occurred on May 29 this year when the IEC sold its property to the Next Leader Fund.

In a letter to the fans, the IEC said their decision was “made after carefully reviewing several factors, including the club’s financial condition, management team, and goals, particularly promotion to the Premier League.”

The letter added: “There are areas where expectations are misaligned and which we believe could hinder our future partnership.

“The combination with the outbreak of COVID-19 has created more uncertainty about EFL’s financial condition and overall football business.”
