The Dallas Cowboys have been “in the mix” on some successful trades in recent offseason. Sure, they got a first-round pick for their best wide receiver at Amari Cooper in 2018. But it’s also been rumored that they’ll be involved in all of Jamal Adams’ drama over the past two years.
In the end, Adams commanded a lot more from the Seahawks than Dallas was comfortable with. But if a safety that’s about to be paid can land you two first-round picks, what is a top-notch defensive end worth?
Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox wondered exactly that in his recent post, suggesting the Cowboys should consider buying Lawrence to see what kind of comeback he would pay. Granted, the Cowboys are in a sticky contract situation with their quarterback, and any extra headroom for Stephen Jones in the cap space department would be welcome, I’m sure.
“At 28, Lawrence is in the prime of his life. With 29.5 sacks over the past three seasons, he is a producer. The Cowboys should see what they can get from a team that needs assists like the Cleveland Browns.
This is a time when trading for choices is misguided, however. Lawrence is pretty much all the Cowboys have left in terms of blue-chippers on the defensive end of the ball. They’ve put everything on their offense, especially their passing game, over the past few seasons. And while this has put them in a competitive position as 2020 approaches, it has also led to question marks over their defense.
Without Lawrence, it’s hard to see any of the Cowboys’ race men gain much respect for opposing infractions. Yes, they’ve added some solid veteran depth inside the line, but hoping Aldon Smith gets back into shape isn’t a great Plan A on the defensive end.
DeMarcus Lawrence is the heart and soul of the Cowboys’ defense, and while they’ve shown themselves capable of converting to their first-round picks in the past, playing on a draft class when you already have a passer. of passes at its peak would not be the smartest move.
