Which Undrafted Rookie Will Make New England Patriots List

The Patriots are in the middle of the most interesting and important off-season for more than two decades. Tom Brady moved to Tampa Bay. Bill Belichick remains in place with a list of veterans. There are many more questions and opinions regarding the reigning AFC East champions. In the coming weeks, WEEI.com will ask and offer answers to 20 of the most critical questions facing the Patriots of 2020.

Today’s question: Which undrafted recruit will make the list?

Hannable: The wide receiver is a position without a lot of defined roles, especially on the backend of the depth table, which certainly gives a UDFA a better chance of staying with a good summer.

There are two possibilities in Jeff Thomas and Will Hastings and we go with Hastings. Sure, he probably had a better chance if Jarrett Stidham was definitely going to be the starter after playing together at Auburn, but we’re still putting our money on Hastings.

New England needs to rejuvenate and hasn’t picked up a receiver, so why not keep a UDFA? Hastings also brings value to some special teams because not only could he play a regular role, but he is also a specialist in kicking.

Hastings is as lucky as anyone to be Jakobi Meyers this year.

Deer: It is the off-season of Auburn in New England. First, the idea was that Jarrett Stidham could be the heir to Tom Brady. Now Cam Newton has brought his star power to Foxborough. And, the Patriots have a pair of former Auburn Tigers who might just be seen as intriguing non-intriguing rookie free agents with a chance to make a list.

Wide receiver Will Hastings could be a “sexy” choice, especially given the New England history of slot stars and his resume as a kicking specialist. But I’m going to go with another Auburn import – Nick Coe.

Once upon a time, the defensive lineman was considered a rising prospect. His university career reached a plateau and never reached the heights he could have had. But his talent combined with a fairly thin Patriots depth of defense lineup should give Coe an opportunity to gain a job in New England this summer. His experience playing a variety of positions, including linebacker, makes the 6-5, 291 pound prospect a unique camp with an obvious defensive athletic advantage.
