When professional golfers hit a dimpled golf ball, they really turn into lousy players

Hitting a golf ball can be difficult AF – as evidenced by my fantastic hundo the last time I came out of the links. But have you ever thought about what it might be like to hit a dimpled golf ball? While many of us would imagine tearing hell out of a piece of plastic, it would still result in a 250-300 yard flight with a driver, but it doesn’t actually seem to be the case. How do I know? Because a group of professional golfers has tried it and, well, the results have been epic failures.

Thanks to a recent video released by Titleist, we saw a handful of professional golfers test their luck with a golf ball that looked like a heavier ping pong ball. Without the dimples in the ball – which are used to determine speed, launch and rotational speed – professional golfers ended up struggling pretty badly with their shots. Take a look below to see the results.

While you have to admire Matt Fitzpatrick’s question about the golf ball exploding without the dimples, which would be really cool, the real results weren’t much nicer. Watching professional golfers struggle to hit a golf ball over 150 meters from the tee is pretty hilarious – and a good reminder that when the equipment has changed, it sucks as much as you or me.

Of course, even with a dimpled golf ball, it’s hard to imagine that a guy like Bryson DeChambeau still can’t destroy it over 300 meters away – because the guy is an epic-sized beast. Honestly, would anyone doubt that Bryson could challenge the law of physics and almost drive the green with this dimpled version? I wouldn’t put it further.

So now we all know why dimples on a golf ball are so important – why, without them, we should be content with more than 10 seconds on par with what we already experience.
