Manchester United have been encouraged to bring Dean Henderson back to Old Trafford this summer in a fortunate situation for David De Gea.

De Gea has been the subject of more criticism since his last high-profile mistakes in the Chelsea FA Cup semi-final defeat at Wembley, with many fans wanting to see the Sheffield United Henderson loan – which was linked to the Blues – held at the club this summer and installed as the new n. 1.

Speaking with Betfair, former United striker Dimitar Berbatov said: “If United decide to bring Dean Henderson back from Sheffield United, I think he will do De Gea well.

“Players need that competition and Henderson is doing incredibly well in my opinion.

“Henderson is 23 years old, who for a goalkeeper is still very young, has a lot of football in front of him, but you can see that he is hungry to play and I think the competition that could lead to De Gea could be the difference or switch.

“Sometimes when you feel secure in your position, it’s the moment you start making mistakes.

“It’s the same with outfield players, when you think you’re untouchable you make more mistakes because you’re too confident.”

For now, De Gea appears to maintain manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s confidence and has started his penultimate Premier League match tonight against West Ham at Old Trafford.
