Tour of Burgos: Sam Bennett takes the 4th stage, Remco Evenepoel still leader

Sam Bennett won the 4th stage of the Tour de Burgos (2.Pro) on Friday after a 163 km race between Gumiel de Izan and Roa de Duero. The Irishman from Deceuninck-Quick Step won slightly ahead of the Frenchman Arnaud Démare (Groupama-FDJ) and the Italian Giacomo Nizzolo (NTT). Lionel Taminiaux (Bingoal-Wallonie Bruxelles) took fifth place. It thus prolongs the euphoria that reigns within the Belgian team following the success of Remco Evenepoel on Thursday on the slopes of Picon Blanco.

Our compatriot keeps the leader’s jersey after having lived a quiet day in the peloton.

Diego Sevilla (Kometa Xstra), the last survivor of a six-rider breakaway, was caught 12 km from the finish. As the teams prepared for the sprint, Jacopo Guarnieri (Groupama-FDJ), who was in the leading positions of the peloton, fell near the red flame, creating a break in the peloton. Sam Bennett found himself alone in the lead and continued his effort to the end, securing the 45th victory of his career, the third of the season. It thus offers a second victory in a row to Deceuninck-Quick Step after that of Remco Evenepoel at Picon Blanco on Thursday. Démare took second place at 4 seconds, Nizzolo third. Taminiaux placed fifth.

Evenepoel keeps his leader’s jersey before the last stage, Saturday, between Covarrubias and Lagunas de Neila (158 km). The race will end with an ascent of 4.2 km at 11%.

Colombian Ivan Sosa won the last two stages of this stage race.
