Dhe FC St. Pauli chose an in-house solution when looking for a new head coach. Timo Schultz, who has been a player and coach for the club for 15 years, succeeds Jos Luhukay.
After the disappointing 14th place and violent clashes with several leading players, St. Pauli had separated from Luhukay at the end of the season. The previous youth coach Schultz will receive a contract until June 30, 2022. He is to promote the talents and continue to cultivate the offensive football he prefers.
“Timo is a young coach who knows the club, the environment and the needs very well and has already played with our teams in the game that we prefer: an active, offensive football,” said sports director Andreas Bornemann in a club announcement on Sunday over the 42-year-old.
Schultz has proven “that he can further develop and stabilize teams. So with his idea and his aspiration he fits us and our goals, ”emphasized Bornemann. Club boss Oke Göttlich welcomed his decision to promote a man from his own ranks.
Nuremberg saves itself against Ingolstadt
For a long time it looked as if 1. FC Nürnberg was relegated to the 3rd division. But shortly before the end, Fabian Schleusener saved the club with his late goal from relegation.
“The club is committed to training not only players, but also its coaches,” emphasized Göttlich. For Schultz himself, it was “out of the question” to accept his club’s offer. “After many years in the young talent center, it is the ideal entry into the professional business for me,” said Schultz, who has often been considered a candidate for the head coach position.
138 games with the professionals
His predecessor Luhukay had put up with various top performers and parts of the media and, despite the two victories in the city derby against HSV, had not kept in office.
“After last season we are of course going into the new season with a certain humility, but also with clear ideas. I’m looking forward to my new team and can’t wait to develop something with the boys that will make our fans happy, ”said Schultz. St. Pauli had secured the remaining class only on the penultimate match day.
As a midfielder, Schultz played 138 games with the professionals and 18 games in the second team. After his playing career, he initially supervised the U23 for one year as assistant to Jörn Großkopf and was also team manager for the professionals (2011/2012), then he worked until 2014 as an assistant coach under Michael Frontzeck, Roland Vrabec, Thomas Meggle and André Schubert .
In 2015 he switched to the youth division and took over the U17 Bundesliga team. In 2018, Schultz successfully completed his license to teach football, and since 2019 he has coached the U19 in the junior Bundesliga.
