By now, you are well aware that being a tour professional is difficult and that passing Monday qualifying is more difficult than doing it through a Metallica concert without your ears ringing. That said, this story involving Steve Allan is too good to be shared. Well, too good unless you’re Steve Allan.
The 46-year-old Australian played impeccable golf in Monday’s qualifying for the Korn Ferry Tour events, throwing a pair of 64 without bogey. So, what is the problem? He did not qualify. For EVERY tournament.
Thanks as always to Ryan French, AKA Monday Q Info on Twitter, for bringing this extraordinary and rough story to light.
There are 15 little birds and no cart over 36 holes, and it wasn’t good enough. Ouch.
If it is a consolation for Allan, who won the 1998 German Open on the European Tour and has two runners-up on the PGA Tour, he wasn’t alone when he felt low despite being low. Last week, Allan was one of four players to shoot 64 (!) And not qualify. And this week, there were actually three players who fired 63 (!!) and didn’t earn any of the eight points up for grabs.
OK, so in fact qualifying is probably the only thing that could make him feel better. So wait, Steve, keep shooting at 64 and one of these weeks you will qualify. Could be.
