The Sad Story of Andrew Robertson and Juergen Klopp

Liverpool

Andrew Robertson and Juergen Klopp share stories of the experience of losing loved ones. Here’s the story.

Celtic released Robertson from the academy in 2009. The situation made him sad, but was able to rise again with confidence after getting the trust of his aunt.

The 26-year-old left back then joins Queen’s Park academy. He made his professional debut at the club in 2012 and then moved to Dundee United in 2013.

Andrew Robertson’s career at Dundee United continued to climb, but at the same time he lost his aunt due to death. One season at Dundee United, Robertson moved to Hull City and joined Liverpool in 2017 to achieve great success with cool trophies: the Champions League, Premier League, European Super Cup and Club World Cup.

“I’m a normal 15-year-old child so there might be tears, but mom and dad gave me a favorite curry that night (when Celtic let it go),” Robertson told Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp, quoted by Sky Sports.

“My aunt came to the house and she said to my mother, ‘I told you, he will be a footballer’ and that is something I always remember,” he continued.

“When I was at Dundee United, on Christmas Day, unfortunately he died. He was a person who always trusted me, it was something special, even when maybe no one believed me when I was young.”

“But that (aunt died) is something that bothers me a little, she doesn’t see me lifting the Champions League trophy, lifting the Premier League trophy and other things like that,” Robertson regretted.

Klopp also has a story that might be sadder than his foster children. The German manager lost his father when he recently started his career as a tactician.

“My father never saw me as a manager. He died four months before I became manager,” Klopp told Robertsons.

“He supported me starting from a career (as a player), with very strong criticism and things like this, but now my real career, he never saw. That is a difficult thing every time,” Klopp continued.

The conversation between Andrew Robertson and Juergen Klopp was documented in a video filmed. Later it will be displayed in the FA Cup final that brings Arsenal vs Chelsea at Wembley this weekend.

The video was made for the ‘Heads Up’ campaign, pioneered by Prince William, as well as a collaborative initiative between The Royal Foundation and the FA. There are also a number of players and managers from the Premier League who share stories about mental health as part of the ‘Heads Up’ campaign.
