The real-life diet of Bryson DeChambeau, which imposed itself on the boom of long units

Golf was one of the first major professional sports to return during the coronavirus era, and the inevitable post-quarantine history was Bryson DeChambeau. In particular, his body: a little more like a line defender than a professional PGA Tour, the 26-year-old was suddenly hitting the absolute bejeezus from the ball, taking absurd angles and shaving long-lasting hits. “Bryson DeChambeau is Breaking Golf,” said a New Yorker To send title.

It was not all a transformation in quarantine: DeChambeau, currently 7th in the PGA Tour ranking, spent a better part of last year earning, adding 20 pounds before the virus stopped. But then he used the block to add another 20.

There’s more to golf than hitting far, of course, but the Puma-sponsored athlete put the pieces together to win the Rocket Mortgage Classic earlier this month, and is considered a favorite for the big streak. tournaments that were rescheduled in late summer and fall, including the US Open and Masters.

So DeChambeau is hungry for big wins this unconventional season. But he’s also hungry, period. In a recent interview with GQ, DeChambeau discussed his 2,000 calorie breakfasts, his impressive intake of protein shakes and his indifference to both vegetables and days off the gym.

For the real-life diet, GQ talks to athletes, celebrities and everyone else about their diet, training activities and the pursuit of well-being. Keep in mind that what works for them may not necessarily be healthy for you.

GQ: Tell me about the beginning of your day.

Bryson DeChambeau: I usually wake up between 8 and 10 and have a fairly healthy breakfast. When I am awake it depends on whether I train later in the evening. I will have four to five eggs with five or six pieces of bacon or sausage. I will also have two toasts or a cream cheese bagel, perhaps some grape jelly. It depends on the day, how I feel. So, I’ll have two Orgain protein shakes. The smoothies are pre-packaged, so nothing more than what comes in the bottle. I think they have around 250 calories in each bottle. I don’t make any supplements. It is precisely these protein shakes and natural foods.

This is a good philosophy.

Yes, they don’t really count calories or anything. I guess that’s about 2000 calories. Soon after, if it’s my week out, I’ll do a light practice and go to the course for a couple of hours. I will do some speed training with my golf swing, trying to get up as fast as possible. Then after that, I train, implementing the things I learned from Greg Rospkoff. It is a MAT [muscle activation techniques] specialist. It taught me a lot about how to take care of the body. Normally I’d go to see him, but he’s in Denver, and at the moment it’s not an option. But he gave me the knowledge to be able to help me as much as possible when things aren’t going right. It’s all training. No physical therapy. It’s all about isolating your muscles as much as possible and training each muscle to function at its fullest potential.

What is a typical training week like?

Well, for the most part it is a lot of basic stuff, because it is the one that is most used in golf. You must be able to use a lot of rotation forces, trunk rotation elements, trunk flexion, lateral fold of the posterior extension – many of these things. Of course, the shoulder joints must also be quite mobile. So, every day there is a basic workout, and then I will do upper body or lower body. It takes me at least an hour to an hour and a half a day. You know, my gym is in my garage and I don’t have air conditioning in there, so sometimes it takes me some time. I will be sweating there for a while. I have a shirt that I will wear sometimes when I train, and I will know that I am really working hard because if you sweat a certain amount, the Puma emblem appears outside the shirt. It is almost inspirational. I started out wearing a medium shirt and now all I get is an XL.

And you train every single day?

Yes. No matter what, it’s every single day. I don’t take days off. I found out that when I stopped doing things, my body started lowering its tolerance levels. So for me, it’s actually a recovery mechanism and a training mechanism to tell my body, this is the force you need to produce. If I sit and do nothing for a few days, gravity suddenly starts to push my body down. So, I can’t hold back all the forces I’m producing. Moving regularly helps me turn off all check engine lights when things happen. When they arise, I can resolve them very quickly.

I don’t do physiotherapy or massage. Whenever I tried to massage deep tissue or put things on my body or something else, I felt like I got up from the table worse for it.

Lunches?

Well, by the time I finish training, it’s already around 18:30. So, I’m ready to have dinner. Dinner usually consists of a 2: 1 carbohydrate to protein ratio. Surprisingly, I don’t eat too many vegetables. I have not found any benefit. I have already had blood tests and all my blood results return to normal. So for me it’s a lot of carbohydrates and proteins. I went through a keto diet phase and I lost a lot of weight and muscle strength. It seemed to me that that was not the way for me, even if for some people that is absolutely the way. There is no way to make a way to do it.

Usually I take rice or potatoes, occasionally they can be vegetables. So steak or chicken. I really don’t fish that much.

So are you really only eating two big deals a day?

Well, I scold myself a lot and probably have about six or seven protein shakes at the end of the day. I also have protein bars if I only need one for a couple. I’ll pop or have some sugar here and there. You have to enjoy life at some point in time. Right?

What is sugar?

I like M & Ms.

Anything else after dinner?

After dinner I will sit down and enjoy the night. I’ll watch Twitch, E-sports, play Fortnite. So I’m going to have a protein shake tonight. Usually it is the last thing I will do, then I will go to bed. They are so easy to drink, and I better have a bowl of cereals or something, you know? Then I go to bed around 10 or 10:30 and try to sleep as much as possible.

Any other dietary tricks we should know?

I don’t drink much alcohol. And I just got this new water machine, a Kangen water machine, which is a turning point. You can change the pH level from your tap. Basically, the water enters the house and you can change the pH from 9.5 to 2.5. It is used for several reasons, but in general many of the foods we have today are super acidic in nature, especially in the American diet, and drinking water at a certain pH can help balance it. When I started drinking my water with a pH of 9.5, I immediately had more energy. It’s a different feeling. It is the purest water I have ever had in my entire life. I can actually insert pH strips there to check the pH levels, so I can try it before I even drink it.

Have you always been so curious and in the “why” behind your training and nutrition?

I’ve always been interested in life in general, growing up. I’ve always questioned everything. I didn’t have many resources when I was young. I have not been able to travel all these roads with these questions that I asked at an early age. But now that I’ve been able to have some success, I have gone into most of these things and taken only what added value to me. I always try to add more value to my life in general. I mean, my goal is to live at 130 or 140. I really think it’s possible now with today’s technology. I think someone will do it in the next 30 or 40 years. I want humans to be better. I want them to be successful. I mean, Hey, it’s all the things I’ve experienced that have helped me do my best. If it helps you, fine. If not, we continue to work on it. We continue to understand things. This is my opinion on life.

Train to run on the mountain. Apparently Everest does not so other than preparing for your local half marathon.
