The Champions League stays in Movistar until 2024 for 975 million

Telefónica has reached an agreement with UEFA on Thursday for the broadcast of the Champions League and the Europa League until the 2023-2024 season for an amount of 975 million euros, about 10% less than what it paid in the season precedent, although the contracts are different.

Specifically, Telefónica Audiovisual Digital – a wholly owned subsidiary of Telefónica – has signed an exclusive acquisition contract for audiovisual rights for the broadcast in Spain of the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, UEFA Youth League and, as a novelty, the UEFA Europa Conference League, which will break away from the UEFA Europa League, according to what was reported this Thursday to the National Securities Market Commission (CNMV).

The agreed amount is slightly lower than the one signed by the multinational in 2018, when it signed an agreement with Mediapro for the acquisition of the emission rights of the Champions League and the Europa League in the Spanish residential market for three seasons (2018-2021) for 1,080 million euros, as it was then reported to the CNMC.

The agreement, announced this Thursday, will be for the 2021-2022, 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 seasons, according to the company, which will pay 325 million for each of them, compared to the 360 it paid then.

The contract guarantees Telefónica the full rights of the main European football competitions for all its clients, both residential and hotels, restaurants, cafes, etc.

The President of Telefónica Spain, Emilio Gayo, has assessed that this agreement demonstrates, in addition to the company’s support for sport, that football is an asset that drives business and brings profitability to Telefónica.

Along with the two major competitions at European level, the contract includes the European Super Cup and the UEFA Youth League meetings.

The novelty for 2021 will come with the birth of the UEFA Europa Conference League, developed from the Europa League and which will make these competitions more inclusive among European countries.
