The Burnet Park golf courses are damaged by dirt bikes

Syracuse, New York – Syracuse police are investigating vandalism at several greens on Burnet Park golf course on Sunday.

Police spokesman Sgt. Matt Malinowski said today that the damage was done by someone on a dirty orange / red motorcycle who rode on the green and appeared to have run a rear tire between 18:30 and 20:30.

Illegal dirt bikes in the city have been in the police center since spring, Malinowski said. Motorcycles and off-road vehicles have become a common source of complaints: they are driven in city parks, city streets and run through meadows.

There are no estimates of the costs of damages yet, said Syracuse park commissioner Julie LaFave. The damage was done on four greens – at holes 3, 4, 6 and 7, he said.

He said the field, off Coleridge Avenue in the city’s Tipperary Hill area, remains open to play while damaged greens are being repaired. The 9-hole course, built in 1901, is one of the two courses in the Syracuse city park. The other is the 9-hole layout at Sunnycrest Park in the city’s Eastwood neighborhood.

Municipal police are asking anyone who has information on the damage to Burnet Park, or who observes illegal activities by cyclists or ATV cyclists, to call them on 315-442-5200.
