Tennis: Tiafoe is positive for COVID-19, retires from the Atlanta event

REUTERS: Frances Tiafoe has proven positive for COVID-19 and has been forced to withdraw from the American Team Cup exhibition tournament in Atlanta, the American said on Saturday, July 4th.

On Friday, Tiafoe played in the first session and beat Sam Querrey in consecutive streaks at the event involving the top eight American players.

22-year-old Tiafoe had said after the match that he had fought to play in the heat and dizzy.

“Unfortunately, I was tested late Friday for Covid-19 and have to retire from the American Team Cup special event in Atlanta this weekend,” said Tiafoe on Twitter.

“For the past two months, I have trained in Florida and have tested negative there until a week ago.

“I plan to take a second test early next week, but I have already started the quarantine protocol as recommended by the medical staff here in Atlanta.”

Event director Eddie Gonzalez said that Tiafoe was tested on arrival in Atlanta and that the American passed the daily temperature tests.

“After his game, he showed symptoms and was tested again and tested positive,” said Gonzalez in a statement https://allamericanteamcup.com/news. “Tiafoe left the event site and will not participate in the rest of the event.

“After learning this information, we immediately started cleaning and sanitizing the event site thoroughly, and we put in place protocols to track contacts and alert people that they may have been exposed.”

Christopher Eubanks will take over from Tiafoe for the past two days.

Although the number of admitted viewers was limited due to the social distance protocols, hundreds of people attended Friday.

Novak Djokovic was criticized last month for hosting the Adria Tour in Serbia and Croatia after the world’s number one and three other players – Grigor Dimitrov, Borna Coric and Viktor Troicki – tested positive.

Djokovic and his wife Jelena have since tested negative for COVID-19.
