Steelers’ Stephon Tuitt chooses to represent flag ‘because I’m a proud American’

Pittsburgh Steelers defensive end Stephon Tuitt reiterated his stance on the national anthem in a lengthy Instagram post Thursday.

Amidst MLB players kneeling during the national anthem and NBA players concocting plans to kneel down in front of Tuitt’s post, the NFL player made it clear that no one was going to talk him out of putting on his hand over his heart during “The Star-Spangled Banner” on game days throughout the 2020 season and beyond.

“I represent the flag because I am a proud American,” he wrote. “As stated before, this country has provided and rewarded my family in many ways through our persistence and hard work. I will continue to honor my country and be an example for my children to stand up for what they believe in. When it comes to police brutality and the Black Lives movement, I will support these causes in other ways. It is unfortunate that a few non-professional people have caused such havoc in our country and damaged the confidence of its citizens. I will not let these people take me away from the opportunity that this country gives to everyone. God protects you.”

His post came days after he tweeted that he was planning to represent the national anthem this season.

CHARLES BARKLEY: “ If people don’t kneel, they’re not a bad person ”

Plus, I’m not on my knees for the flag and I’m not fucking anyone who has a problem with it, ”Tuitt wrote on Twitter. “My grandmother was an immigrant from the Caribbean and… worked her ass to get 20 people the right way. She had no money and trained to be a nurse. She is living well now.

In six games last year, Tuitt finished with 22 tackles and 3.5 sacks. He missed the last 10 games of the season after tearing his chest.

It is not known if the Steelers will protest during the anthem in 2020.

Earlier in the offseason, Tuitt’s teammate Cameron Heyward said the team would be protesting in the unit, but they chose to do so.
