It was a season to forget for Tottenham Hotspur.
After firing Mauricio Pochettino last fall and replacing him with Jose Mourinho, many expected the North London team to step onto the Premier League table and secure a likely top four result.
This certainly did not happen.
With one game left, Tottenham is in seventh place in the standings, with a sixth place the best they can hope for if the results go on the last day of the season.
But even finishing sixth means that they will lose a place in the Champions League.
While this will clearly make things more difficult both from a practical and financial point of view to attract the best players to North London, it could also prove problematic for their current players.
Many stars have joined the club in hopes of testing themselves with the European elite, but it looks like this won’t happen for at least a season.
Several players are able to move to higher level clubs, but none more so than Harry Kane.
The Spurs and England talisman has proven itself to be one of the best strikers in the world with a goal record that is the envy of most.
Valued at £ 108m from Transfermarkt, Kane has been linked with moves to Real Madrid and Manchester United in recent years, and with Spurs struggling at the time speculation has surfaced again.
But according to Jose Mourinho, he has no pressure to sell any player.
Quoted from the Daily Star, he said: “Have I had assurances that I won’t need to sell key players this summer? Yup.
“There will be small changes – a big overhaul needs a lot of money. I don’t think there are many clubs ready to buy, buy, buy – what they will do is because they can do it with or without FFP.
“If they do, it’s because they feel they can do it. We know what we can do and what we can’t do.
“We don’t want to sell our important players and this is immediately a limitation because by not selling great players you don’t have big revenue.
“So we will be very balanced, but once again the goal is to improve the team. I am absolutely convinced that we will make it.
“Sometimes a club can improve by giving a better balance to the team. So we are very calm and our team next season will be better than this season. “

This is a huge boost for Tottenham Hotspur.
It has been a season that has not been planned in North London and the hope is that they can get back on track next year.
However, if they are to do it, they will need their best players.
This obviously includes Harry Kane.
The English skipper is one of the few truly world-class talents on Jose Mourinho’s team and if he is serious about returning to the Champions League, he will have to keep it.
Of course the money speaks in this situation, but in the current economic climate it is difficult to see someone pay the amount required to get Spurs to sell.
If they manage to keep his next term, hopefully he can fire them again big time.
But if that doesn’t happen, I think it will be coming next summer.
