Rio Ferdinand names the Manchester United player who benefited most from the dismissal of Jose Mourinho

Rio Ferdinand claims that Manchester United has successfully rebuilt Anthony Martial after Jose Mourinho stole his trust.

Martial has scored 22 times this season and has left at least five games this season to add to that count.

Speaking BT Sport Before United’s victory over Crystal Palace, in which Martial marked his 22nd campaign strike, Ferdinand said that Martial is starting to realize the potential that was on display when he joined United.

He said: “I think Anthony Martial was probably the main one for me that needed to be rebuilt.

“Jose Mourinho brings Zlatan Ibrahimovic, he takes his number nine shirt. What can I do for the trust of a player, I can’t tell you. It takes away your trust.

“He’s a poacher, a six-yard boxer, who scores unkempt goals if you want. But he can also bring other people into play.

“The intensity with which he plays, the skill, the cunning he has. This is what I love about him . He’s doing everything you want from a number nine right now.

“This is what we saw when he first entered the scene from Man United as a teenager. He came to score absolute goals as a hitter in the world, involving and guiding people.

“Dribbling, it’s world class football what you see there. What I love about him is that his intensity has changed, his whole body language has changed, there is a new positivity in him.

“He is someone who likes to have the conviction of the current manager. This is what you need.

“Regardless of which level you are a player in, you need your manager’s support and conviction in order to showcase what you have.”
