Relegation to the Bundesliga – Bremen is biting to the rescue – sport

After a dramatic final phase, Werder remains in the Bundesliga. A 2: 2 is enough for the Bremen team thanks to the away goals rule against Heidenheim.

Werder Bremen remains in the Bundesliga. At the last moment, the team of coach Florian Kohfeldt brought a desolate season to a happy end and secured the late class relegation with a 2: 2 (1: 0) at 1. FC Heidenheim. In the relegation second leg on Monday evening, the Bremen team took the lead early on through an own goal by Heidenheim’s Norman Theuerkauf (3rd minute). Tim Kleindienst (85.) once again caused excitement and a gripping final phase with the 1-1. A win by the hosts would have sealed Werder’s first relegation in 40 years after the 0-0 in the first leg. Ludwig Augustinsson (90. + 4) shot the Bremen in the lead, the 2: 2 through a penalty kick by Kleindienst (90. + 6) the guests could get over thanks to the away goals rule.

Frank Schmidt, on the other hand, missed the temporary crowning of his almost 13 years as an FCH coach and remains with his team in the second division. The long career of the 41-year-old Werder attacker Claudio Pizarro, on the other hand, has come to a conciliatory end. When Pizarro moved to Werder in the Bundesliga in 1999, Heidenheim hadn’t even played in the top division.

The Heidenheimers made more noise in the stands than in the square. The delegation from the Swabian club had brought a cowbell, drum and even a siren, but this did not unsettle the guests. Werder performed confidently over long distances in one of the highest stadiums in Germany. After less than a minute, a cross from Ludwig Augustinsson landed at Joshua Sargent’s feet, who, unsurprisingly, was unable to push the ball from a meter across the line. A few seconds later, a Heidenheimer put the Bremen in the lead instead. After a technical mistake by Sargent on the edge of the penalty area, Theuerkauf unluckily pushed the ball into his own goal. Before the game, Kohfeldt had spoken of “trust” in your own abilities. This trust returned with the early leadership gate.

It was not noticeable that the coach had left his striker Niclas Füllkrug surprisingly on the bench. Werder demonstrated his technical superiority and let Heidenheim run after the ball. What the hosts had to counter was their athleticism and fighting strength. The team of coach Schmidt did not create any chances in the first round.

Nevertheless, the game remained close because one of the biggest Werder problems in this season was also evident in Heidenheim: the lack of fitness. The longer the game lasted, the slouched Kohfeldt’s team became. The FCH seemed much more trained and came shortly after the break for Stefan Schimmer (46.) and David Otto (48.). And because Heidenheim had to come now, Werder got rooms.

Within three minutes, Milos Veljkovic (57.), Augustinsson (58.) and Sargent (59.) missed some top-class chances. But then there was a sudden excitement for another reason. In the middle of the second round, about 50 Heidenheim fans came to the stands and made a loud noise. Bremen’s managing director Klaus Filbry was equally upset about it. A few minutes later they were gone. Kleindienst caused tension with his equalizer – but the sensation failed to materialize.
