Rehabilitation for Trebel 2.0: necessary desperation attempt

Last season, Adrien Trebel played just four times in the Jupiler Pro League. The red-haired Frenchman seemed to have been written off in Lotto Park, but nothing seems further from the truth. In the past exhibition games against Sint-Truiden and Saint-Etienne, Trebel again got playing minutes from the Purple & White technical staff, and he is currently grabbing both hands. Is the big comeback approaching? Or are there other reasons for Trebel’s flare-up?

TRANSFER OR REHABILITATION

No, 2019-2020 it was not Adrien Trebel’s season. The Frenchman was completely ignored the majority of the past year and he also had a long knee injury. In the meantime, Trebel still appeared on the surface in the matches against Club Brugge, Sint-Truiden, KAS Eupen and Standard, but he did not seem to have much future in the Lotto Park. However, in the recent exhibition games on the upcoming football season, the Purple & White technical staff Trebel once again gives a chance. And for the time being thanked the midfielder for that confidence.

Based on his pure qualities, Trebel always has a place in the A core of Sporting, but this does not justify his heavy annual salary of 2.7 million euros. The original plan was to sell Trebel during the past mercatos in the Middle East, where he is still interested to this day, but it was not yet final. That may have a lot to do because the transfer period in the Middle East has not yet started, but in the meantime Anderlecht are putting him on the scales by giving Trebel the necessary playing minutes. With a view to a future transfer, or rehabilitation in the A core.

A NEW CHANCE

A second chance of Trebel at Anderlecht was originally considered unlikely, but according to La Capitale, the new Sporting board – with Head of Sports Peter Verbeke as a major pioneer – would like to give the ex-Standard player a new chance. That statement also contains a ground of truth, because in the meantime Trebel has already been drafted twice in the exhibition games against Sint-Truiden and Saint-Etienne. As long as his heavy contract continues, the obligation must also be paid according to the modalities, and why in the meantime cannot Anderlecht use Trebel’s qualities?

The advantages of allowing Trebel play facilities during the preparation are countless. As mentioned above, Anderlecht cannot accept the fact that his contract must be paid out. In addition, Trebel’s last game dates from December 15, 2019, with 29 minutes against Standard, followed by knee surgery along with months of rehabilitation. Not drafting Trebel reduces its shape, market value and attractiveness for other clubs to purchase it. He longs for competition rhythm, and a fit Trebel has much greater added value in sport and economics than a non-fit Trebel. It seems a real win-win situation.

ADVANTAGE FOR CUTTING

La Capitale therefore predicted that the Anderlecht board would like to restore the superfluous midfielder, but Sport / Voetbalmagazine also raised this claim. In addition, the weekly magazine puts forward two major advantages. One: coach Franky Vercauteren gets an ‘extra’ defensive midfielder in this way. And two: part of the destruction of capital can still be recovered. That sounds like music to the treasurer of Anderlecht, because financially there is still very little space. And then capital destruction is obviously out of the question, but an optimal return is very welcome.

On the other hand, questions can also be raised about a possible return of Trebel. As stated earlier, he was lying in the rag basket for months after an injury and surgery on the knee. That is why it is exciting to follow how Trebel deals with the intensity of the training and the rapid follow-up of the matches. For the time being, no pains or inconveniences had been identified after the matches against Sint-Truiden and Saint-Etienne, which undoubtedly means a great boost. But it also remains to be seen how Trebel can recharge mentally after a year and a half with physical discomfort. Moreover, Trebel already has 29 springs on the clock.

SCORING POINTS IN SAINT-ETIENNE

In the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard of Saint-Etienne, Trebel already proved that he can still add value to Anderlecht. In the second exhibition game against Les Verts, Franky Vercauteren opted for a central midfield with the young Marco Kana as football player number six, Trebel as dynamic midfielder and Yari Verschaeren as the most advanced pawn. The purple and white engine ran on a mix of experience with youthful talent and it also caught on. Kana and Trebel in particular left a good impression, while Verschaeren previously underperformed.

The fact that Trebel made a positive statement in France is quite remarkable after such a long period of inactivity, but he was nevertheless able to distinguish himself. For example, it was noteworthy that Trebel’s passing accuracy was several percent higher than his seasonal average last year. In proportion, however, he received the ball on average just as often as last season, so that Trebel’s passing quality evaluated positively. And player-inspirator Vincent Kompany will undoubtedly like it, because ‘his’ Anderlecht must still be able to handle a smooth ball circulation.

TREBEL 2.0?

Despite his rich injury history, Trebel did not shy away from the duels against Saint-Etienne. It was striking that he concentrated more on the defensive work than the offensive, while in recent years it had been the other way around. Trebel was even one of the players who, along with Edo Kayembe and Anouar Ait El Hadj, did most of the defensive work – both in number of duels and in their efficiency. The Frenchman also left, except for defender Hannes Delcroix, the most interceptions in the match against Saint-Etienne. It is clear that Trebel scored points last weekend.

Nevertheless, it will be difficult for Trebel to squeeze into the type team that Franky Vercauteren currently has in mind. In the ‘A-team’, the coach lined up central midfielders Peter Zulj, Albert Sambi Lokonga and Michel Vlap, and that triangle also did more than well in the first match against Saint-Etienne. Still, Trebel could be a worthy alternative, because injuries and suspensions will follow next season. In this way, the market value of Trebel can rise again and as a result it can become attractive again for other clubs. With an ongoing (and long-term) contract until 2023, that is perhaps the best scenario for Anderlecht.
