Racism in the Premier League – “That’s how I woke up” – Sport

Wilfried Zaha from Crystal Palace has been racially insulted and threatened online. The striker makes this public, his club stands behind him.

Crystal Palace striker Wilfried Zaha appears to have been racially insulted by an opposing fan on social media before Sunday’s game against Aston Villa. The 27-year-old Ivorian published several pictures with offensive, racist content and threats that he is said to have received from a villa fan via Instagram. “I woke up with that,” wrote the soccer international.

The club reacted immediately and wrote on Twitter: “This is an absolute shame and should not happen. We are with you, Wilf, and everyone else who has to suffer such terrible discrimination.” Aston Villa also immediately announced “working with the police” to identify the perpetrator.

Palace coach Roy Hodgson was also affected by the incident. “It is very sad that a player had to wake up to this cowardly and despicable discrimination on the day of a game,” said the former England coach.
