Niklas Kaul has to end decathlon season due to elbow surgery

WITHehnkampf world champion Niklas Kaul has to cancel the athletics season due to an elbow operation. This was announced on Thursday by the “Athlete of the Year” from 2019 on Instagram. “Today I have to end my 2020 season before it even started. After having problems with javelin throwing again in May, it turned out that I have had an elbow injury since 2017, which has prevented me from continuing throwing training since then, ”wrote the 22-year-old from Mainz.

In addition, Kaul posted a black and white photo on which he hides his head in his arms. “In order to restore the stability of the elbow, I decided to have surgery. That’s why I was operated on my limb yesterday, ”he explained. The intervention was carried out in the orthopedic clinic in Markgröningen in Swabia. “I’m fine so far, the operation went without any incidents and from tomorrow it will go to rehab or my # roadtotokyo2021,” explained Kaul.

He had considered participating in the German all-around championships in Vaterstetten at the end of August after the Olympic Games in Tokyo and the European Championships in Paris did not take place this year due to the corona pandemic.

At the World Cup in October 2019 in Doha in Qatar, he had surprisingly triumphed with 8691 points and had chosen the youngest decathlon world champion in the history of athletics. Like long-distance world champion Malaika Mihambo, he was chosen as the winner at the “Sportsman of the Year” gala in Baden-Baden in December. Apart from Kaul, only Torsten Voss from Schwerin was the German World Champion among the “Kings of Athletes”.

Kaul had mourned Willi Holdorf earlier this week. The first German decathlon Olympic champion from 1964 died after a serious illness and also inspired the whiz kid.
