It looks like fans won’t be seeing much football next month. After discussions on halving the preseason in the NFL, a new report says the league will “most likely” have a preseason game for each team. Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reported the news, and the schedule would be based on the location of all the teams.
“A source in the league told PFT that a preseason match is currently the” very likely “result of negotiations to resolve the various rules before the camps open,” wrote Florio. “Ideally, the games would consist of a minimum of travel (eg, Jets against Giants, Chargers against Rams, Ravens against TBD), with the goal that all games take place without any team flying.” Florio also mentioned that the setup will not work for teams like the Seattle Seahawks who are not within driving distance of any NFL city. The Denver Broncos is another team that should make it to a location if they play a preseason game.
It is not set in stone as the NFL and the NFL Players Association discuss procedures and guidelines for training camp and the regular season. However, it is clear that the teams will not be playing four pre-season games, as that would mean that the games would start in less than a month. The Pro Football Hall of Fame match is canceled, scheduled to take place on August 6. With the increase in COVID-19 cases across the country, some cities may not be ready to host a match in early August. This week, the NFLPA announced that a total of 72 players have tested positive for the coronavirus. Some players are not sure if a season will happen, including Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
“I think we think we will have a season?” Rodgers said during his participation in the American Championship of the century. “I think there is still a lot to be resolved.” One of the things the league will likely do is see how the NBA and MLB play during the pandemic. Both leagues will start playing at the end of the month and have plans in place to try to keep players as safe as possible. NFL players will arrive at camp around July 28.
