Mikel Arteta tells Arsenal’s stars what it takes to land in the Champions League

Mikel Arteta has asked his Arsenal stars not to outdo each other because they can barely see the qualification for the Champions League.

After three league wins, the Gunners immediately worked their way back into the Europa League positions.

It is more interesting that they are only eight points ahead of fourth-placed Chelsea and six behind United in fifth place.

Champions League qualifying could drop to fifth place if Man City’s UEFA ban is maintained. However, Arteta has made it clear to its players what efforts are needed to secure their place at the top European table next season.

“We have to win every game and then wait and pray,” said Arteta. “It’s not a game, we have to go game by game.

“A few weeks ago, we were really far from thinking about Europe and we’re a little closer at the moment, so let’s go game by game and see where it takes us.”

Arsenal have not been in the Champions League for the past three seasons, and it would be a great success for Arteta to seal the way when they finished tenth.

His men won on Saturday against the wolves, who are only one place and now only three points above them.

But Arsenal are now facing a difficult run-up, starting with third place in Leicester, followed by the derby in north London with Tottenham and Master Liverpool’s visit.

Then comes the trifle of the FA Cup semi-final against defending champion Man City before the season ends with clashes with Aston Villa and Watford, both fighting for points in the relegation battle.

Arteta added: “Well, we’re in a good run, we’ve got some momentum. Now we come to the crucial point of the season where we will compete against the top teams in the next two weeks.

“We’re just trying to prepare as best we can. We know how important these games will be for the future of the season, so we’re very focused and determined to try as best as we can.”
