Mikel Arteta sets Arsenal’s ambitious goal after the Wolves win

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has suggested that Arsenal could still end up in the Champions League posts this season as they aim to play European football again next season.

The Gunners recorded a decisive 2-0 victory over the Wolves on Saturday, which led them to three points and one position from their opponents.

Goals from Bukayo Saka and Alexandre Lacazette gave Arsenal their fourth consecutive victory in all competitions and significantly increased their chances of qualifying for Europe or even for the Champions League next season.

The Gunners are now in seventh place on the table and are only six points adrift of Manchester United in fourth place, although Chelsea should collect three points against Watford, that gap would increase to eight points.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, Mikel Arteta was asked if his team had returned to the race for Champions League posts.

“I’m in the race to try and win against Leicester and then let’s see what happens,” he replied.

“Weeks ago it seemed impossible and the games we had in the coming weeks. We try to improve every time and there are more possibilities that the better we play, the better we compete.

“At this level of intensity, if we play like this against any team, we will make it difficult for them.

“We’ll see.”

Arsenal’s next game comes against the Foxes, who sit in third place on the table.

A victory at Emirates Stadium on Tuesday evening will bring the Gunners six points from Leicester with only five games to play.

After Leicester, Arsenal face North London’s Derby against Tottenham before hosting Champions Liverpool at Emirates Stadium before the matches against Aston Villa and Watford.
