United must finish in the top four after the CAS ban verdict

Manchester United will not qualify for the Champions League if it finishes fifth in the Premier League this season after the Manchester City ban from Europe has been lifted by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

United are currently in fifth place and are closing in the top four after an unbeaten 17-game game. They sit fourth from fourth ahead of Monday night’s game against Southampton, but will go third with victory at Old Trafford.

Normally, only the top four qualify for the Champions League, but City’s two-year ban from European football would have given fifth place for next season’s competition.

Punishment and a 30 million euro fine were imposed on City for “serious violations” of the Financial Fair Play regulation in February. The club immediately announced plans to appeal and brought their case to the Sports Arbitration Court last month.

Now, CAS has announced that City has not disguised equity funding but has not collaborated with UEFA authorities. Their fine has been reduced to € 10 million and the ban has been lifted, leaving City free to play in the Champions League next season as they are ready to finish second in the Premier League.
