Manchester United discover their opponents in the quarter-finals and semi-finals of the Europa League in a draw

Manchester United will play in Copenhagen or Basaksehir in the Europa League quarter-finals.

United are 5-0 ahead of LASK Linz ahead of next month’s 16th round return game at Old Trafford and will almost certainly face Copenhagen or Basaksehir in Germany. If United arrive in the semifinal, they will face Olympiakos, Wolves, Seville or Rome.

Turkish team Basaksehir lead 1-0 in the return leg in Copenhagen, which beat United in the group stage of the Champions League in 2006.

The draw kept United separate from Inter, who signed Romelu Lukaku and Ashley Young from United this season and still have Alexis Sanchez on loan.

The quarter-finals, semi-finals and the Europa League final will be played in four regions – Cologne, Duisborg, Dusseldorf and Gelsenkirchen – in Germany between 10 and 21 August. The final will take place in Cologne.

The glory of the Europa League offers United a way back to the Champions League but if they win the remaining four Premier League games they will secure a qualifying place before the Europa League resumes in August.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport is expected to deliver its verdict on Manchester City’s appeal against a two-year ban from Monday’s European competitions and a fifth place in the Premier League could also guarantee a return to the Champions League.

If United wins the Europa League, they will face the Champions League winners in the European Super Cup in Budapest on 24 September.

United won the UEFA Cup for the first time in club history in 2017, beating Ajax in the Stockholm final.

Quarter-final draw:

Wolfsburg / Shakhtar Donetsk vs Eintracht Frankfurt or FC Basel

LASK / Manchester United vs Copenhagen / Basaksehir

Inter / Getafe vs Rangers / Bayer Leverkusen

Olympiakos / Wolves vs Sevilla / Rome

Europa League program:

5-6 August: round of 16

10-11 August: quarter-finals (Cologne, Duisburg, Düsseldorf, Gelsenkirchen)

16-17 August: semifinals (locations to be confirmed)

August 21: final (Cologne)
