Kelly praised keeping the 49-year-old together when Kaepernick began to protest, says former receiver

Former San Francisco 49ers coach Chip Kelly was praised on Saturday for his ability to keep the team together in 2016 when Colin Kaepernick demonstrated during the national anthem.

Jeremy Kerley, who was a big receiver for this team, told TMZ Sports that Kelly had authorized Kaepernick to speak to the locker room to explain why he had chosen to kneel.

“In order for Chip to do this, I think it was pretty cool for him to get the elephant out of the room and clear up any doubts,” said Kerley. “I think it was pretty cool. I love Chip for that.

“It sort of cleared up all the doubts and stuff in the locker room and we just bonded, like we were close and it was fun.”

Kaepernick created a firestorm when he chose to kneel to protest police brutality and racial injustice. The 49ers went 2-14 this season.

The former Nevada quarterback threw for 2,241 passing yards and 16 touchdown passes. He has not played since this season. Kerley said he believed Kaepernick had what it takes to continue competing in the NFL.
