Karl-Heinz Rummenigge on Cas judgment on ManCity and Pep Guardiola

Bayern Munich’s CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is critical of the European Cup acquittal for Manchester City with coach Pep Guardiola. The committee of the European Football Association Uefa responsible for the Champions League “did not do a great job, at least that is how it looks,” said Rummenigge at a video press conference for the “Audi Digital Summer Tour” on Monday. “Everything I heard from different sources was not well organized beforehand.”

The International Sports Court in Cas lifted a two-year European ban on Man City by Uefa two weeks ago. The Cas justified its judgment, according to which the evidence is inadequate or the acts are statute-barred. The continental association had accused the top club from the English Premier League of breaking the rules of the financial fair play. City rejected the allegations. “I’m happy for my friend Pep Guardiola because I know what it means for him to participate in the Champions League,” said Rummenigge. His Munich team could face the English at the semi-finals of the Champions League final tournament on August 12th.

Rummenigge advocated readjustment of the financial rules. “When we introduced financial fair play ten years ago, it was said that you shouldn’t spend more money than you earn. That should be put more in the spotlight again. That is why we have to modify the financial fair play somewhat, ”Rummenigge judged. “We have to find a changed rule that is accepted by everyone. This affects the players, agents and also the clubs. Because financial fair play will ultimately benefit everyone. ”

Rummenigge continues to expect challenging times for football in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. “The whole world and every industry is affected by the pandemic and football is no exception. We are all happy that we could end our season, ”he said. The Premier League is now over, Germany has set a good example with the continuation of the Bundesliga. “We can certainly expect a major financial slump in the coming year,” said Rummenigge. In the past season only the last quarter of the games had to take place without spectators. This may affect more club games in the new season.

Rummenigge regrets that this year the Golden Ball will not be awarded to the best footballer in the world. “Robert Lewandowski is having a fantastic season. He may be playing the best season of his career, ”said Rummenigge. Fifa has not yet canceled its world football selection, here the football world stars can continue to hope. The winners of the Ballon d’Or, which has been awarded since 1956, are chosen by international trade journalists. Between 2010 and 2015, the election took place under the umbrella of the FIFA World Association, as a replacement for the election as World Soccer Player of the Year. Since 2016, the magazine “France Football” has been awarding the Golden Ball itself.

Lewandowski scored six goals this season in the DFB Cup, 34 in the Bundesliga, and leads the top scorer list in the Champions League with eleven goals. A world football ceremony is one of his wishes. For the first time in the history of the Ballon d’Or, no one will be awarded this year because of the Corona crisis. Because, among other things, numerous leagues could not be played to the end and the European Championship and Copa America had to be postponed, this decision was made, it said in the statement of “France Football”.

That is a shame because most of the leagues could have ended their season, Rummenigge said. However, the season in France was canceled. Because of the corona virus pandemic, FC Bayern and their partner Audi are not going on an intercontinental trip this year, but rather the so-called Audi Digital Summer Tour. For nine days, there will be social media events with players, fans and former Bayern players.
