English football has many great teams, but only the best dominate the eras.
When Bill Shankly took over the second division in Liverpool in December 1959, his goal was clear.
“My idea was to make Liverpool a bastion of invincibility. Napoleon had this idea. He wanted to conquer the bloody world. I wanted Liverpool to be inviolable. My idea was to build Liverpool until everyone finally had to submit and give in.”
“I want to build a team that is invincible so they have to send a team from bloody Mars to beat us.”
The legendary Scotsman got his wish, but it wasn’t until Bob Paisley took over in 1974 that a large red team really began to dominate.
Between 1975 and 1990 Liverpool won 10 of the 15 championship titles and won four European trophies.
But only two years later, another side emerged from the shadows to conquer everything that lay ahead. And they came from a much closer environment than Mars.
Sir Alex Ferguson’s infamous Manchester United team, which had promised to throw the Reds off the pitch, did just that. It won 13 of the 21 championship titles offered between 1992 and 2013 and won two Champions League titles.
Given the dominance of the two rivals in the northwest over the past half century, it was a surprise that a trend in the Premier League has changed in recent years following the appearance of a “Big Six”.
Before Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City defended the Premier League crown last season and passed Liverpool to continue the 2018 Centurion success, no team had won consecutive championships in 2009 since Manchester United.
After swapping titles with rivals in Manchester, Chelsea and even Leicester City, City, with the help of millions from Abu Dhabi, seemed to be the next dominant force in English football.
But in a glorious season, Liverpool threw a wrench into their factories. After waiting 30 years to be crowned English champion, their 19th championship title at Anfield has finally improved to stop Guardiola on his trail.
Of course, this does not mean that Man City is a spent power. They will try to fight back more than ever to get their crown back next season.
But they are no longer the obvious candidates to become England’s next untouchables.
The two title rivals will compete again next season, trying to gain the upper hand in what is already proving to be the most fascinating struggle in European football.
And with the upcoming ban on the Champions League, City is still waiting for Continental to succeed. They had their great teams that grew up on domestic success with the hunger for more trophies, but their hopes of creating a lasting legacy have not yet been fulfilled.
Liverpool has already conquered all of Europe. In Qatar, they even conquered the world for the first time in their history last December and finally finally fulfilled this old Shankly promise.
And now they are Champions of England.
Klopp made believers out of doubters. The Unbearables After winning a sixth Champions League in Madrid, the Reds dominated a league season like no other to become the inevitable, even if they lost their potential Invincibles day.
What this Liverpool team has achieved is really something special. You will go down in history. You are the immortals.
Fans, journalists and experts no longer have superlatives to describe Klopp’s side. But is that enough?
After each championship title in the club’s glory days, on the first day of training before the season, Ronnie Moran left the winners’ medals in a box and asked players to get one if they thought they deserved it.
This setting must now return to Anfield.
After waiting so long for their team to win the Premier League, Kopites will celebrate this triumph like no other.
But Liverpool’s goal now must be for the spectacular to become normal.
Klopp will try to imitate Paisley and Ferguson and achieve something Guardiola has not yet managed to rule English football.
Registered in Anfield by 2024, this is just the beginning. It is time for the German to build his own bastion of invincibility.
Turn a championship title into two in 2021 to defeat Man City again, and Liverpool fans could see another great era begin.
And not even the Martians can stop them.
