Jonathan Allen sends Washington Twitter into frenzy with ‘HTTR’ tweet

A name change for the Washington football team seems imminent, as reports surfaced on Sunday evening that the team planned to withdraw the name “Redskins” on Monday.

As the team continues to delve into the renaming process, there is one man who could potentially hinder the team. He would be the trademark guru Martin McCaulay.

McCaulay has applied for several different brands of the team’s potential new name in recent weeks, according to Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk, via the US Patent and Trademark Office.

According to research by Florio, McCaulay requested marks for the following: Redtails, Renegades, Monuments, Veterans and Red-Tailed Hawks. All of these requests were made after July 3, the day Washington announced that it was conducting a thorough review of its name.

It should be noted that McCaulay did not request the fan-favorite brand name, the “Washington Red Wolves”. Washington owner Dan Snyder had previously applied for the Washington Warriors mark, but has since abandoned it, according to the Washington Times. McCauley filed for “ Washington Warriors ” in 2015.

This is nothing new for McCaulay. In 2015, he applied for several trademarks for potential team name replacements in Washington, including Americans, Bravehearts, Federals, Forces, Founders, Gladiators, Monuments, Indigenous, Pandas , Pigs, Red-tailed Hawks, Renegades, Sharks, Veterans and Tribes. At the time, he told FOX5 that he had spent more than $ 20,000 to secure the brands.

While Washington plans to change its name, having a new nickname before the start of the 2020 season could be quite difficult.

In an interview with JP Finlay of NBC Sports Washington, former NFL leader Andrew Brandt said it would take a “Herculean effort” for Washington to have a new nickname by week 1 due to the brands and licenses provided with the new brand image.
