At the age of 19 in Seoul, he fell victim to the greatest scandal in the history of Olympic boxing, which is now over a hundred years old. One should know: Complaints about wrongful judgments had long been common before the 1988 Summer Games, and it has remained that way since then. In Korea, which is divided into north and south, after the American duel with South Korean Park Si-Hun, one could only agree: Roy Jones jr. beat him up. But three out of five judges gave the middleweight gold to Park – as a gift to the hosts of the games.

The statistical analysis of the fight shows: The American had scored 86 hits, the Korean only 32. In addition, he had been counted in round two after an impact. Park was so embarrassed that he demonstratively grabbed Jones’ wrist at the award ceremony and stretched his arm up. Later, as they wait for doping control, the loser will tell the winner: “You won, I feel miserable.” Jones jr. “Don’t believe what the judges did to me. I sacrificed nine years to win a gold medal ”. The Executive Committee of the international boxing association (Aiba) awarded him the Val Barker Cup as the technically best boxer of the games on October 2, the final chord of a tournament of scandals. A cheap consolation price. After this experience, the continuation of the amateur career was no longer an issue for the shocked athlete.
