Horst Hrubesch becomes a young director at Hamburger SV

Comeback after 37 years: club legend Horst Hrubesch returns to Hamburger SV after almost four decades. As the Hanseatic announced on Friday, the now 69-year-old will be available for the traditional club as new junior director for an unlimited period. Hrubesch, as the person in charge of the young talent center, should significantly advance the “processes in talent development”, the association said.

“Here again we have to talk more about football and work on it. It’s about hard work, patience and conviction. This is the only way to get ahead, ”said the former“ headed monster ”. Sports Director Jonas Boldt said: “We are very happy that Horst wants to support our idea and our work.”

Hrubesch shaped the most successful era of the North Germans between 1978 and 1983, concluded with winning the European Cup of the national champions. In these five years, he scored 96 goals in 159 Bundesliga games. With the national team he became European champion in 1980, in the final the classic center forward scored both goals in the 2-1 win against Belgium.

Hrubesch was in the service of the German Football Association (DFB) from 2000 to 2016 and celebrated great success. In 2008 with the U19 and in 2009 with the U21 Hrubesch became European champion, in 2016 the Olympic team he supervised in Rio de Janeiro won the silver medal. Two years later, the soccer teacher at the women’s national team stepped in for a transition phase.

The HSV had tried several times in the past for the services of hobby anglers, but no agreement was reached. Above all because the straight-line Hrubesch thoroughly disliked the chronic cabal in the Hanseatic city. Several presidents and bosses got a basket from him.

But now the gnarled coach is ready for a new task. “In the discussions I got the impression that HSV has now taken the right path,” said Hrubesch.
