Golden State Warriors: Should Kelly Oubre Jr. be a commercial target for Dub?

With the 2019-20 season of Golden State Warriors already in the books, the focus will be on trying to acquire the right pieces to help the franchise return to the NBA elite.

Armed with two first-round picks that could be on top of the board between now and 2022, plus a $ 17.2 million trade exception, chief executive Bob Myers has many options for compiling the list of Steph Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green.

Athletic’s Anthony Slater is examining potential commercial targets for the Dub in a weekly series, and this time he looks at Phoenix Suns forward Kelly Oubre Jr. With the Suns likely to get a lottery choice, Slater says there is a path. to face between the two teams:

“This presents a win-win exchange scenario: Phoenix jumps high to get the prospect whose timeline and controllable contract perfectly match their young core, the Warriors move away during the draw with at least one season of Oubre (slipping in their $ 17.2 million trade exception before it expires) and a subsequent lottery prospect still believe it will turn into a valued long-term principal member. “

Oubre would have given the Warriors another wing option to play alongside Curry, Thompson and Andrew Wiggins. The 24-year-old has an average of 18.7 points, 6.4 rebounds and a 35.2% shot from deep this season. Oubre took 5.5 points per game during the year and, as Slater points out, most came in catch-and-shoot scenarios. He has 6’7 and a good wing defender, something Golden State desperately needs.

I like Slater’s suggestion that the Dubs could exchange choices with the suns. With Phoenix likely to end in the tenth or eleventh choice, it would give the Warriors a chance to add a young talent like Isaac Okoro, Killian Hayes or Devin Vassell, provided they are still on the scoreboard.

The downside of the deal is that Oubre is slated to be an unrestricted free agent after the 2020-21 season, which means that Golden State is expected to sign him again at a rather high price.

What do you think of Oubre’s potential adaptation with the Warriors?
