Giants release Pro Bowl kicker Aldrick Rosas

The New York Giants are taking out Pro Bowl kicker Aldrick Rosas days before training camp begins after his arrest earlier this summer, according to multiple sources.

Rosas, 25, was charged with three misdemeanors resulting from a June 15 hit-and-run accident in Butte County, Calif. He faces charges of reckless driving on a highway, property damage with hit-and-run, and driving with suspension / revocation for DUI of alcohol / drugs.

Rosas could still face the discipline of the NFL. The league has indicated in recent weeks that the issue remains under review.

With Rosas on the verge of release, second-year cornerback DeAndre Baker is expected to end up on an exemption list. Baker faces four counts of armed robbery and four counts of aggravated assault with a firearm. The alleged theft took place during an illegal dice game at a house in Miramar, Florida with 15 to 20 occupants in attendance, a source told ESPN’s Cameron Wolfe. A commotion ensued after the parties were accused of cheating with “loaded dice,” the source said.

Rosas’ problems with the law also follow a difficult 2019 season. Rosas only succeeded 12 of 17 field goal attempts (70.6%). He was re-signed as a restricted free agent for $ 3.3 million this offseason after the Giants used a second-round offer against him.

It was a precipitous fall for Rosas, who made the Pro Bowl after the 2018 season. He scored 32 of 33 field goals (96.9%) that year in a breakout season. The former undrafted big-legged kicker from southern Oregon had made his way onto the Giants’ active roster in 2017.

Without Rosas, the Giants are signing former Jets kicker Chandler Catanzaro to a one-year contract, a league source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Catanzaro retired last August and was released from the Jets reserve / left list last week.

The veterans of the Giants are due to report to training camp on Tuesday.

Rosas was driving a black Chevrolet SUV on the morning of June 15 when a collision with a T-bone occurred. Witnesses saw Rosas driving erratically on the double yellow lines and at an estimated speed of 100 mph when he turned on a red light and struck a Ford pickup truck, the police report said.

Rosas allegedly tried to leave the scene of the accident before his vehicle broke down. He got out and fled the scene on foot without shoes.

Officers attended Rosas’ home after the scene was cleared. The 2018 Pro Bowl kicker wasn’t there but was later stopped walking the side of a road with his hands, legs and bare feet covered in blood. Rosas was eventually treated for minor injuries at Enloe Medical Center and later booked into Butte County Jail.

The police report originally indicated that alcohol impairment was considered a factor. But there was no mention of a breathalyzer or a blood test.

None of the charges filed earlier this month reflected the involvement of alcohol.
