Formula 1 returns to the Nürburgring. The racing series announced on Friday that a Grand Prix would be scheduled for October 11 on the traditional circuit in the Eifel.

Dhe Formula 1 surprisingly returns to the Nürburgring in autumn. The racing series agreed with the operators of the traditional circuit on a guest performance on October 11th. The Grand Prix of the Eifel is the eleventh race in the emergency calendar for this season. For the time being, the plan is without viewers. Most recently, the premier class of motorsport was driven at the Nürburgring seven years ago. At that time, Sebastian Vettel won the home game in the Red Bull on the way to his fourth world title.

Because of the financial turmoil at the Nürburgring, the track operators had recently been unable to afford Formula 1 appearances. The German Grand Prix was only held at the Hockenheimring. Hockenheim was also no longer in the Formula 1 racing calendar for this year. Because of the consequences of the corona virus pandemic, however, both German routes came back into discussion because the racing series was looking for further suitable courses in Europe for its emergency operation.

While Hockenheim could not agree on a deal with the Formula 1 bosses that would not have had any financial risks for the ring shareholders, the business with the Nürburgring came about. It is a “very fair and partnership-based construct,” said Managing Director Mirco Markfort of the German Press Agency. It is already the 41st Formula 1 race on the circuit at the foot of the Nürburg.

The agreement brings the racing series a step closer to its goal of at least 15 Grands Prix this year. Races were also confirmed in Portimão, Portugal on October 25 and in Imola, Italy on November 1. This means that 13 World Cup races are now scheduled.

The short-term cancellation of the season opener in Melbourne in mid-March was followed by an almost four-month break. Formula 1 then started in emergency mode at the beginning of July and has held three World Championship races in Austria and Hungary since then.

Next are two races in Silverstone, UK. In addition, appearances in Barcelona, Spa-Francorchamps, Monza and Mugello and Sochi are already scheduled. The season is to end with guest appearances in Bahrain and Abu Dhabi in December. The races scheduled for autumn in the USA, Mexico and Brazil cannot take place. It is still open whether two races can be held in Asia in November.
