Haas’s Formula 1 drivers were punished with a ten-second time penalty after the Grand Prix of Hungary for helping during the warm-up lap. It meant that Kevin Magnussen dropped from place nine to ten and Romain Grosjean from fifteen to sixteen.

The asphalt was wet before the race, but dried up quickly. Haas then decided to call both drivers to the pits for slicks during the warm-up lap. This decision did not do the racing team any harm, because Magnussen was in third place after a few laps, ahead of Grosjean. Both drivers slowly slumped backwards during the race, but Magnussen was flagged ninth, while Grosjean came in fifteenth.

According to Article 27.1 of the Sporting Regulations, a driver must drive the car without outside assistance. The non-public technical directive 011-17 gives further substance to this, whereby communication between the team and the driver is restricted during the warm-up lap. Haas broke the rules by calling in the drivers. This offense resulted in a time penalty of ten seconds per driver. Magnussen lost his ninth place to Carlos Sainz, while Kimi Räikkönen passed the Grosjean rankings.
