Fifa: Criminal charges against Gianni Infantino opened – sport

The Swiss judiciary has opened criminal proceedings against FIFA President Gianni Infantino. It’s about secret meetings between the head of the World Football Association and the head of the federal prosecutor, Michael Lauber. This was announced by the supervisory authority on the Federal Prosecutor’s Office (AB-BA) on Thursday in Bern.

Investigations are also being carried out against a school friend Infantinos, the Valais chief prosecutor Rinaldo Arnold. And in order to be able to open criminal proceedings against Lauber as well, the parliament in Bern is asked to waive its immunity.

At the end of June, the AB-BA appointed the lawyer Stefan Keller, who is chiefly the President of the Higher and Administrative Court of the Canton of Obwalden, as the federal’s extraordinary public prosecutor. He was to investigate several lawsuits filed against Federal Attorney Lauber, FIFA President Infantino and others.

A similar case cost Sepp Blatter the office

Now Keller came to the conclusion that “in connection with the meetings between Federal Prosecutor Michael Lauber and Fifa President and the Valais Higher Prosecutor, there are signs of punishable behavior. Art. 320 StGB), favoritism (Art. 305 StGB) and incitement to these facts. ” Further criminal offenses and opening of proceedings were reserved, it said in your communication from the AB-BA.

Lauber, Infantino and Arnold had arranged secret meetings several times, although Lauber’s federal prosecutor’s office investigated FIFA in several proceedings. All those involved even want to have forgotten one of these meetings. Only a few days ago, a Swiss court called this absurd. Lauber has therefore resigned. In order to investigate him, the Immunity Commission of the National Council and the Legal Commission of the Council of States must agree in Bern.

According to the FIFA statutes, the world association Infantino would have to suspend until the criminal proceedings are completed. A similar case had cost Infantino’s predecessor Sepp Blatter in 2016.
