FIFA chief Infantino launches investigation into secret meetings with prosecutor / Article / LSM.lv

The Swiss prosecutor has launched criminal proceedings against Janis Infantino, president of the International Federation of Football Associations (FIFA), on charges of secret meetings with the head of the federal prosecutor’s office, the Swiss judicial supervisory authority reports.

The meeting between Attorney General Michael Lauber and Infantino took place in 2016 and 2017, when Swiss prosecutors investigated corruption in FIFA, including how Russia and Qatar had acquired the right to host the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, respectively.

The special prosecutor, who was assigned to lead the case, concluded that “there are indications of criminal conduct”, reports the Swiss judicial supervisory authority.

Alleged misconduct includes abuse of office, disclosure of professional secrecy, assistance to and incitement to offenders, the statement said.

The special prosecutor has also asked the Swiss parliament to waive Lauber’s legal immunity so that criminal proceedings can also be instituted against him.
