Fernando Gaviria wins second stage in the Tour of Burgos, …

Ferando Gaviria (UAE Team Emirates) has won the second stage of the Tour of Burgos. In a disordered sprint he drove everyone off the wheel. Arnaud Demare (Groupama-FDJ) and Sam Bennett (Deceuninck Quick-Step) complete the podium. Felix Grosschartner (Bora-Hansgrohe) remains leader.

After yesterday the punchers could let off steam, today it was the turn of the sprinters. In a stage of 168 kilometers, five riders went out. The peloton gave them four minutes as a gift, but it was written in the stars that the stage would end in a sprint.

And so it happened. The escapees were simply caught and the riders prepared for a mass sprint. There was no mate in Fernando Gaviria. He distanced himself from Arnaud Démare and Sam Bennett with striking ease. Jasper Stuyven finished sixth, Edward Theuns finished eighth.

With this victory, Gaviria can draw a line under a difficult period. After all, the Colombian contracted the coronavirus during the UAE Tour in March and then remained in quarantine for more than a month.

Felix Grosschartner’s leadership position was never compromised. Tomorrow it is up to the classification men. Then the riders will have the toughest ride of the week put in front of the wheels. The finish is on the Picon Blanco, a mountain of 7.8 kilometers long with an average gradient of 9.3%.
