“Fernandes has given Man Utd another dimension”: Portuguese is “the first piece of the puzzle”, says Brown

Former Red Devils defender is among those affected by a January signing that helped improve the game for those around him

Bruno Fernandes gave Manchester United “another dimension,” says Wes Brown, with the Portuguese director considered “the first piece of the puzzle” for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The Red Devils hope that even a talismanic figure will prove to be one of the last pieces as they strive to go back in contention for great honors.

Few could have predicted that Fernandes would have had such a big impact on Old Trafford when he was picked up by Sporting CP in the winter transfer window.

He was, however, about to hit the field by running in English football and recorded 10 goals in 20 appearances in all competitions.

His willingness to take risks and ask for more from those around him saw the collective standard raised in Manchester.

United benefited from this with a third place in the Premier League and qualification for the Champions League.

They are also still in pursuit of the glory of the Europa League, with everyone connected to the club determined to achieve tangible success in 2020.

Fernandes seems destined to lead that charge, along with the likes of Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial, with Brown seeing optimism from a rejuvenated Red Devils outfit.

The former United defender said MUTV when asked who rekindled a spark at Old Trafford: “For me I should say Bruno, I know he only came in January but, as we spoke, he raised the whole team, brought a bit of a ‘ other dimension to the team.

“Out of that Mason [Greenwood], Rashy, Martial – everyone took advantage of it.

“I think it all depends on – not only on him – but it started. It was the first piece of the puzzle.”

Fernandes has promised to continue leading the example for United, with the Champions League qualification plan to represent the first step on a return to the top of national and continental matches.

He said: “We trained hard and worked hard for this moment. We know that the only thing we have managed to achieve this season has been to enter the Champions League, so we fought hard for it, but we are not happy enough because we know this club and these players, who can bring much more for the club .

“I think we have enough qualities to fight for some titles – more than one title, you know? I think we have to win some trophies and then we will be really happy.”
