Drew Brees Criticizes NFL Response to COVID-19: “We Need Football”

The New Orleans Saints quarterback has expressed his opinion on whether professional football should return in the fall amid the coronavirus pandemic. Drew Brees went on Twitter to voice concern over how the NFL has handled the impending reboot of the season. Brees stressed that people need football and that the NFL will prevent the return of the sport if it does not follow current COVID-19 recommendations. “If the NFL is not doing its part to keep players healthy, there is no football in 2020. It’s that simple,” said Brees in his tweet. Since Louisiana is a home to football, the Saints are contenders for the Super Bowl, and the LSU Tigers are reigning university champions, many residents are eager to get the sport started on time. The NFL has already cut preseason in half due to coronavirus problems. White House task force specialist Dr. Anthony Fauci said playing football in the fall was not a given. In an interview with CNN’s Dr. SanJay Gupta, Fauci said he had significant reservations about being able to play games without certain security measures. Unless players are in an isolated community bubble and tested almost every day, it would be difficult to see how football could be played this fall. Fauci said that a second wave in the fall could occur and could be complicated by a predictable flu season, which could mean that football could not be played this year. Allen Sills, Medical Director of the NFL, made the following statement to EPSN in response to Fauci’s comments: “We are developing a comprehensive, rapid-test program and rigorous protocols that call for shared responsibility among all within our football ecosystem. ” We will make the necessary adjustments to respond to the public health environment as we prepare to play the 2020 season as planned with increased protocols and safety measures for all players, staff and participants. “Sills said the league plans to return on time.
