In a recent appearance on Eurosport, Stefan Edberg spoke to other champions such as Boris Becker and Mats Wilander. In the speech, he was asked who feels closest to taking tennis from Big 3. He replied:
“I think that Thiem showed that he could have won the Australian Open this year very easily, it was a good opportunity for him. If Rafa were not present, I am pretty sure that one day he will win the French Open. It is probably the closest today, I would say. “
While Stefan feels that Thiem is one of the closest, he complimented other players such as Alexander Zverev and Stefanos Tsitsipas. He feels that they are showing a lot of potential and that they could also take control of tennis from the “Big 3”.
As Edberg said, Dominic Thiem was very close to winning his first Grand Slam at the 2020 Australian Open. This was certainly heartbreaking for the Austrian as he led 2 sets to 1 in the final. However, Novak Djokovic made an incredible comeback and took the title home.
After reaching 2 Grand Slam finals at the French Open, this was the best chance that Thiem had to end the “Big 3” reign. Unfortunately he missed this opportunity, but that won’t stop him from trying again.
