Do you want to be traded? How did it work for the Cleveland Browns and Duke Johnson? – Terry Pluto

CLEVELAND, Ohio – I’m talking about NFL players (not stars) who want to be traded:

QUESTION: Have you seen the old brown Raheem Mostert wants the San Francisco 49ers to exchange it?

REPLY: I did not remember him as Brown. I had to look up and talk to someone with the ball carrier Browns. He was not drafted in 2015 and signed with Philadelphia. It was cut by the Eagles, claimed by Miami. Then cut by Miami. It was claimed by Baltimore, then cut again. The Browns claimed it by waiver on December 14, 2015.

Q: Cut three times?

A: Much more. He has only played three games with the Browns, all in special teams. He returned 12 kicks for an average of 25.8. He also had a tackle on special teams. The Browns cut it in 2016. The Jets and Bears also cut it in 2016 before landing with the 49ers.

Q: Now he wants to be swapped out for a team that loves him?

A: It is a contractual thing. He scored 10 touchdowns and rushed for 772 yards last season. He went from a special teams player to a good ball carrier. In three post-season games, he rushed for 336 yards and five touchdowns.

Q: What does this have to do with the Browns?

A: The 49ers tend to turn around in committee. They believe you can find them anywhere. Mostert is an example. This is not where you spend a lot of money.

Q: Is that why the Browns traded Duke Johnson a year ago?

A: It started with the signing of the Kareem Hunt Browns. Johnson was already supporting Nick Chubb. Even though Hunt would be suspended for the first eight games of 2018, Johnson saw that he was not going to receive many postponements. He requested an exchange and was shipped to Houston on August 8, 2019.

Q: And the Browns traded it to Houston for what became a third round pick, right?

A: Most people in the NFL were surprised that the Browns had a pick as high as the third round for Johnson. Many teams have the philosophy “back to back is back to back”.

Q: You didn’t like Duke Johnson?

A: I did it … and I do it. In his four years with the Browns, he played about 50% of the shots and never missed a game. He averaged 4.3 yards per rush, 75 rushes per season. He has an average of 59 takes. He had a good back all around. Fans will likely remember the near-weekly “why can’t they send the ball over to Duke?” questions during the regular season.

Q: Didn’t you like the job?

A: The deal was good. The Browns had Chubb, who could be the franchise’s best ball carrier since Jim Brown / Leroy Kelly. They were hoping that Hunt would be suspended after eight games, and it happened. Johnson was right, there was no need. He was also very well paid, earning $ 2.2 million in 2019 to $ 4.1 million in 2021.

Q: How did he play for Houston?

A: He had a solid year, averaging 4.9 yards per attempt (83 runs for 410 yards). He played behind Carlos Hyde, another former Brown. The OSU star rushed for 1,070 yards with the Texans. Johnson finished third on the team with 44 receptions. Houston was 10-6 and went into the playoffs. It worked well for Johnson.

Q: So will he be behind Hyde again in 2020?

A. No. Hyde was a free agent. He signed with Seattle for $ 2.75 million. Another “back on are running” in terms of not spending a lot of money on them. Houston traded for another ball carrier named Johnson – David Johnson. It is expensive at $ 10.2 million, all guaranteed in 2020. He only ran 345 yards last year. Not sure if it’s a big update from Hyde or Duke Johnson. He came to Houston from Arizona in the DeAndre Hopkins trade. It was a question of the salary cap.

Q: What did the Browns receive from the Johnson Trade?

A: They ended up with choice # 97 in the 2020 project. They used it on linebacker LSU Jacob Phillips. Some screening services thought Phillips was a medium to medium choice. In other words, the Browns chose it too high. But they like his tackling skills. The Browns have a lot of holes in the linebacker, and Phillips has a chance to save time. He can also help special teams.

Q: How does this apply to the Browns now?

A: Most teams don’t like paying a lot of money for runners. The Browns have a pair of Pro Bowlers at Hunt and Chubb. Hunt is an unrestricted free agent after the season. Chubb is no longer restricted after 2021. In the long run, the Browns will not keep both due to pricing and salary cap issues.

Q: How do they choose?

A: This is part of the 2020 season. Does Hunt avoid trouble and play well without more suspensions? Chubb continues to be one of the first runners in the NFL? Are they staying healthy? They don’t have to make this decision now.

Q: What about David Njoku wishing to be traded?

A: As for the tight side of the Browns, just like I wrote last week … you must be kidding! It has not been productive enough to make this request, although it is a free country with regard to these issues. We will see what the Browns do.
