Dean Smith, head of Aston Villa, complains about the Premier League rules after the Liverpool defeat

Dean Smith, manager of Aston Villa, complained about the temporary five-replacement rule after seeing his team lose in Liverpool.

Sadio Mane and Curtis Jones scored in the last 19 minutes when the Reds took a hard-earned 2-0 win at Anfield on Sunday.

Villa had the better game until the European, World and English champions introduced Jordan Henderson, Gini Wijnaldum and Roberto Firmino shortly after the hour.

And Jones’ first Premier League goal of his career came just minutes after he was also introduced by the bank.

The teams may replace five players with a temporary change in the rules for the rest of the season introduced after the three-month ban due to the outbreak of the corona virus. Smith believes that clubs with larger teams are preferred.

“I don’t think we need to change the rules in one season,” said the Villa boss. “In order to make five submarines, the clubs with the larger and healthier ranks would always benefit from it.

“I don’t really thank Jürgen (Klopp) for sending the big guns on! He has replaced three players who would normally play most games for Liverpool and that will improve the quality they have.

“We worked with them for a long time, but we haven’t shown the quality in the last third.

“If we had played against another team and scored goals. But if you look at the pace of Van Dijk, Gomez and Alexander-Arnold, it’s hard to break them.

“The positive thing is that we left Liverpool here and not many teams will do that.”

Smith added: “I don’t want to be a brave loser. We had a game plan for today. We knew it would be crazy if we came here and tried to throw the champions and the team that has accumulated an incredible number of points in the past two seasons out of football.

“We had a good structure and knew that we could be a good threat to counterattack. Unfortunately, in the last third we didn’t show the quality they showed for their goals

“I thought we really narrowed the balls down to the first three. We felt that they were playing a high line and the space was behind it and we had chances.

“We had a four against two chance in the first half and a possible penalty that Douglas Luiz was convinced he was cut off and fell over. We need a bit of quality, but also a bit of luck. “
