DC Mayor says Redskins name change isn’t the team’s only obstacle: “I think there would be a lot of problems”

The Washington Redskins have long been under pressure to change the team’s name, but even with the process under review, DC mayor Muriel Bowser said Monday that it would not be enough to help land a new one Stadium.

Bowser said in a conference call with reporters that while welcoming the progress, the Redskins have other hurdles to overcome.

“I am happy to see the team and the league evolving in one direction to change the name,” she said, according to NBC Sports. “I think the team called Washington Everything should play in Washington.”

The Redskins franchise has been under pressure in recent weeks to change the name of the team due to its racial overtones. The team announced on Friday that it will be doing a “thorough review” of the team’s name, which has been used since 1933.

But for Bowser, a name change isn’t enough for the Redskins, who will be looking for a new home in 2027, to return to Washington.

“I think there would be a lot of problems. I would hardly say that the name is the only problem that the team or Washington would choose to have a stadium. “

Bowser stopped before saying what the obstacles might be, but said she hoped the team and the NFL would “clarify the process” to change the name.

FedEx – which has the naming rights for the team’s Maryland stadium – officially requested a name change last week. FedEx CEO Fred Smith has a minority stake in the team.
