Chiefs RB coach sees “big jump” for Damien Williams

The Chiefs pushed back carrier Clyde Edwards-Helaire in the first round this year, which led to comparisons with players like Brian Westbrook and Darren Sproles when they discussed how he would fit into the offensive by head coach Andy Reid.

Running backs coach Deland McCullough shares high hopes for what Edwards-Helaire will do, but said it was not “a fair comparison” with the other backs until the team actually got the recruit in the field. McCullough also notes that the team has another good comeback to Damien Williams.

McCullough said that Williams reacted to the arrival of Edwards-Helaire as a “competitor” who will continue to advance in an offense he knows well.

“When he shone, he shone at a level that helped us overcome a bump in a few games – and obviously helped us win the Super Bowl,” said McCullough, via Nate Taylor of TheAthletic.com. “Listening to how Damien talked about himself and the things we do and the things he will do to improve, I think his maturation in this offense will take a big leap this year . “

The Kansas City offensive has provided opportunities for a range of players over the past two years, and there will be room for both backs as long as Edwards-Helaire’s reality is up to its billing requirements.
