A’s LHP AJ Puk goes to IL; Giants without Brandon Belt, Evan Longoria

OAKLAND, California – Oakland Athletics left-handed AJ Puk was added to the list of 10-day injuries on Monday due to a tight shoulder and traveled to Los Angeles to be followed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache to be examined.

Puk, a top prospect who is expected to be in the A rotation once he’s healthy, was disturbed by the problem months ago during spring training.

He recently sensed it in an Intrasquad game and had canceled his trip. Right-handed Daniel Mengden will occupy the back end of the A rotation, manager Bob Melvin said before an exhibition game against the San Francisco Giants.

“The fact that we have to include him in DL immediately is obviously a matter of concern,” said Melvin. “We want to make sure we do it right before we throw him out.”

The Giants will miss two key members of their infield on Thursday’s opening day at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. The first baseman Brandon Belt has an aching right heel, and the third baseman Evan Longoria has a moderate oblique load on the right side.

“I don’t think it is realistic at this point to be so close that either Brandon or Evan will be ready for the opening day,” said manager Gabe Kapler on Monday. “I think it will be a few days in the season. We’re trying to get these guys ready as soon as possible, but without the full intensity that Brandon and Evan need, they just won’t be complete.” ready for use on the opening day against the Dodgers. Exclude no point in the series. “

The San Francisco outfielder, Hunter Pence, was precautionary excluded from the lineup on Monday. He has an inflammation in his right foot.

“Everything is fine with Hunter,” said Kapler. “We’re just monitoring his workload. We’re very confident where Hunter is. He did some live reps at the stadium earlier today and had a good practice session in. Part of that is just staging progress on the opening day at This point … We really think about getting the boys as healthy as possible on the opening day. “
