David Villa is the most successful scorer in the Spanish national team. The striker is said to have sexually molested an intern during his time at the New York City CF club. The 38-year-old defends himself against the allegations.
DSpanish national team record scorer David Villa has rejected allegations of sexual abuse circulating in the United States. “I strongly deny the accusations made against me via Twitter, these accusations are absolutely wrong,” said the 38-year-old ex-professional and world champion from 2010 in an official statement.
The allegations were made a week ago by a young woman who said she was an intern at New York City FC when Villa played there (2015 to 2018).
The club’s Major League Soccer (MLS) had already reacted to the allegations on Wednesday. One takes such things “extremely seriously” and therefore “immediately started an investigation”, it said. “We do not tolerate any kind of nuisance, no matter in which area of our organization,” emphasized the NYCFC.
Sexual harassment is “an important problem,” said Villa. He had learned about the allegations against him from social media. He “did not get a message from this person (the alleged victim) or from New York City FC”. He would “of course cooperate absolutely with the club” in the investigation, because the allegations are also directed against the club. At the same time, his lawyers would seek clarification. As long as the presumption of innocence should also apply to him.
The young woman had assured on Twitter that she had been “touched every damn day” by Villa. She indicated that she had told her superiors about the alleged harassment from the Spaniard, but they had done nothing. “My bosses thought it was great comedy material.” The harassment had burst her career dreams, as she was already terrified of being on a sports field.
Villa ended his career in 2019
With 59 goals in 98 international matches, Villa is the most successful scorer of the Spanish national team. In addition to the 2010 World Cup, he also won the 2008 European Championship with “La Roja”. As a professional he played in Spain for FC Barcelona (2010 to 2013), with whom he won the league twice, and a season for Atlético Madrid which he won again in 2014 in the Primera División.
After guest appearances in Melbourne and New York, he ended his career in Japan as teammate of Lukas Podolski at Vissel Kobe in late 2019.
