A month after the terrible crash in handbike against a truck, expectations are growing for Alex Zanardi after the start of the reduction of sedation announced last Thursday by the medical staff of the Policlinico di Siena, where the former Formula 1 driver is hospitalized in a pharmacological coma.
According to what AdnKronos reports, when conditions allow, Zanardi, who has undergone three head surgeries, will be transferred to a specialized rehabilitation center, perhaps in Northern Italy, perhaps abroad.
No indication of the times: doctors choose caution, everything will depend on how Zanardi will come out of sedation. It will take a few more days for further evaluation on the patient by the multidisciplinary team that takes care of the athlete “to allow each continuation of his therapeutic and rehabilitative path”.
The cardio-respiratory and metabolic parameters of the patient continue to remain stable while the neurological picture remains “serious”.
These are the words of the doctor Paolo Maria Rossini, head of the neuroscience and neurorehabilitation department of Irccs San Raffaele Roma in “La Stampa”: “If he reacts significantly immediately to external stimuli after returning to consciousness, then he could fully recover”.
“Zanardi has had many fractures in the face and the bones, breaking, could have damaged the nerves of the skull, which are fundamental for the functions they perform. If it doesn’t respond immediately to the stimuli, then we must start thinking about a very serious vegetative state ”.
