Alessandro Zanardi has had another head surgery. The treating doctors of the crashed racing driver spoke of a “delicate intervention”. Only a few days ago, Zanardi had been transferred back to the intensive care unit.
Dformer Formula 1 driver Alessandro Zanardi, who had an accident on his handbike, has had another operation. This was announced by the San Raffaele hospital in Milan on Monday.
The 53-year-old Italian, who had suffered severe head injuries in an accident in June, was transferred from a rehabilitation center to the Lombardy capital on Friday.
The day after, he had to undergo a “delicate neurosurgical intervention”, which was carried out by Professor Pietro Mortini, it was said.
Treatment was successful
Tests have shown the success of this treatment, the hospital said. Zanardi was still in the intensive care unit, his condition was described as “stable”.
Zanardi had come to the neuro-rehabilitation center in the outskirts of the city shortly before being transported to Milan. Before that he seemed better. In the beginning he had been in a hospital in Siena in Tuscany and had undergone several operations.
In the meantime, his son Niccolò Zanardi had spoken of “encouraging signals”. In an interview with “Corriere della Sera”, the 21-year-old said: “He’ll make it, I’m sure. He’ll do it again this time, and one day we’ll talk about it. He will speak to me and my (future) children. I am hopeful, as is my mother. ”
The Pope also sent wishes for recovery
Zanardi had lost control of his handbike at a competition in Tuscany on June 19 and collided with a truck. It wasn’t his first bad accident.
The Italian had lost both legs in an accident at the Lausitzring in 2001. At the time, the doctors described his survival as a miracle. He struggled back into competitive sports.
Zanardi also competed in DTM races and won four gold medals at the Paralympics. In his home country of Italy, people take a large part in Zanardi’s fateful path. The Pope also sent wishes for recovery.
